Art about War

I chose to really focus on the Vietnam War.

"Vietnam II" by Leon Golub was created in 1973. As for the location, Golub was living and working in New York City at the time, so it's possible that he painted it there.

The Burnt Man painting by Leon Golub was made in 1964 and is currently displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago in the United States.

The "Think (Flag)" painting was created by American artist William Copley in 1962. Copley was living and working in New York City at the time, so it's possible that he painted it there

The concept I chose was the era WW2-1980; I focused mainly on art surrounding the Vietnam war conflict. The reason I chose this period was because of the conflict of emotions surrounding the war itself; this inspired many artists during this specific time period.

I feel like I chose a variety of different art styles, as well as a diverse range of interpretations regarding the Vietnam War. The first set is a perspective from the soldiers themselves, i feel like the color of red and black depicting blood and death inflicts rage from the veiwer, the second set i picked is from the veitnam perpesctive, one painting using simple shape and lines to the other using a lot of depth and contrast depicting young children’s faces. This makes the viewer feel sympathy towards vietnam which is the oppisite of rage. The third set of paintings is what I would call propaganda art using simple images to show a message that no one is winning this war. I feel like this causes the emotion of peace amongst both groups.

  1. Pool from Prints, 1967, Carol Summers, possibly made in New York, was probably my favorite piece of art out of the blog post. I really enjoyed the contrast in colors presented in the artwork. Overall, I feel as if you could've incorporated your theme or choice of work more in an attempt to connect with the actual over depth and background of artist some.

  2. Hi Bel, I am in the military, and I love how you picked your project about the war. My favorite art piece is the “Vietnam II” by Leon Golub. I agree that this conflict inspired artists to create pieces that related to what was going on or even the emotions everyone was feeling. Fun fact: Artists turned to traditional styles vs abstract art after the First World War.
